Vince McMahon Once Believed All Canadians Would Be Seen As Heels

Vince McMahon is a quirky fellow. Everyone knows about how he tears up Raw scripts and changes people’s ring names. However, Lance Storm has now given some insight into McMahon changing people’s hometowns.

While responding to a fan on Twitter, Storm was asked about Canadian wrestlers being billed from America. He then revealed that McMahon thought all Canadians would be viewed as heels.

“After Bret did the pro Canada anti USA gimmick and then Christian Test and I did the UnAmerican gimmick Vince was concerned fans would view All Canadians as heels so babyface Canadians were billed from US.”

There were a few examples of this during the mid-2000s. Winnipeg-native Chris Jericho began being billed from Manhasset, New York in 2004. While he was born in New York, Jericho has always considered himself Canadian. Similarly, Chris Benoit began being billed from Atlanta, Georgia around the same time, despite being from Edmonton.

Bret Hart’s run in 1997 saw the Hart Foundation take on America as a group of pro-Canada stars. The angle was extremely heated due in no small part to an influx of Raw shows in Canada at the time.
