Lio Rush’s tenure in WWE may have been relatively short, but he had a good time and a great working relationship with Vince McMahon.
Speaking on the Oh… You Didn’t Know? (subscription required) podcast, WWE’s Senior Vice President of Live Events, Brian “Road Dogg” James, also spoke of his recollections of Rush, saying:
“I like Lio Rush a lot.
“I worked with him in NXT, I really like the kid, and he loves the wrestling business.
“He’s a great kid and a great worker, and does some incredible things in a wrestling ring.”
James recalled a particular incident where the young star was ribbed by fellow members of the WWE roster, though didn’t name the instigators, saying:
“One time I came up to sit in my chair for SmackDown, and Vince wasn’t there at the time.
“And sitting in the chair that I would sit in, that is Vince’s, is Lio Rush.
“It turns out some guys ribbed him and told him to sit there.
“I felt bad, and he was so apologetic.”
Although he would only be in WWE from 2017 until his release in 2020, Rush was well regarded for his alliance with Bobby Lashley, and went on to hold the NXT Cruiserweight Championship.
His release would come as a result of WWE’s budget cuts in 2020.
Rush is currently part of the New Japan Pro-Wrestling Super Junior Tag League 2022 tournament.
