Vince McMahon Scraps Fastlane Main Event, Potential WrestleMania Implications

There was a starting development on tonight’s episode of SmackDown when Vince McMahon changed the WWE Championship match at Fastlane, replacing Kofi Kingston with Kevin Owens.

The show started with Daniel Bryan sat in the ring for a contract signing as Stephanie McMahon and Shane McMahon put over Kingston with video packages highlighting his 11 years in the promotion.

Kofi came out with his New Day team mates to a hero’s welcome prepared to sign the contract for the Fastlane match when Vince McMahon made a surprise appearance and declared that he needed to give fans the biggest box office match possible at the pay-per-view.

Then, in an exact copy of the promo he did on Raw a few weeks ago when he replaced Becky Lynch at WrestleMania with Charlotte Flair, McMahon introduced the returning Kevin Owens as Bryan’s new Fastlane opponent. The crowd and Kofi were devastated.

This shocking switch has potential WrestleMania implications as Kevin Owens was originally the reported planned opponent for Bryan at the show. It appears that WWE have decided to switch the title match at the two events, with Kofi in all likelihood now wrestling Bryan for the title at WrestleMania.

It makes sense. It would have been silly for WWE to beat the red-hot Kofi at Fastlane then go to a cold match between Bryan and Owens at WrestleMania. This was, Kofi can get his big shot and potentially his big feel-good crowning moment at the biggest show of the year.
