Report: Vince McMahon Wanted Surprising WWE Star To Stay Ahead Of 2021 Departure WWE

An update has emerged on Raw star Johnny Gargano, following speculation that his WWE absence was caused by the return of Vince McMahon.

The NXT triple-crown champion returned to WWE in August 2022, following Triple H taking over WWE creative.

Many fans of the black and gold era of NXT were excited for Gargano’s main roster run, with the underdog prominently featured on NXT while the current WWE Chief Content Officer was running the brand.

Gargano hasn’t wrestled on WWE Raw since the March 13 episode, when he and Dexter Lumis were defeated by Damian Priest & Dominik Mysterio.

His most recent main roster appearance saw him compete in the 30-man Andre The Giant Battle Royal, before he defeated Grayson Waller on the April 1 NXT Stand & Deliver show.

With Vince McMahon returning to WWE as the executive chairman earlier this year, it has been heavily speculated that McMahon is contributing to WWE creative.

This speculation has fuelled rumors that McMahon’s return led to Gargano’s main roster TV absence, with McMahon’s previous WWE regime often favoring larger wrestlers over smaller stars.

Per Fightful Select (subscription required), this is not the case. McMahon reportedly was actually ‘directly involved’ with communicating to Gargano that he wanted him to stay with the company in late-2021.

Gargano notably left WWE in December 2021, after his NXT contract expired. Gargano publicly stated that he left the company on good terms, and that the door was open for a return down the line, leading to his August 2022 comeback.

In reality, the popular WWE star has re-aggravated an injury that previously kept him out of action, which you can read more about at this link.
