Scrapped Vince McMahon WWE WrestleMania Match Revealed WWE

A WWE WrestleMania match could have been a very different beast had the original creative plans for Vince McMahon gone ahead.

The 2008 WrestleMania XXIV saw JBL taking on Fit Finlay who was accompanied by Hornswoggle, his storyline son.

Hornswoggle, who had also been Vince McMahon’s illegitimate son during 2007, spoke about the original plans for the WrestleMania match on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, saying:

“We had the whole thing with Bradshaw (JBL), and it was such an awesome story, but I come to find out years later it was supposed to be Finlay and Vince at that WrestleMania. Not only that – they were gonna try and make it for a WWE title. It was supposed to be that.

“And I was like, man, if it was against Vince – JBL match is enormous, the build to it and everything – if it was against Vince, can you imagine how much that build would have been, at that time?

“But man I’m very grateful that the match was so fun, and JBL’s just the man, he’s the absolute man, and he’d been nothing but great with me.

“There’s the spot with the trash can in that match that wasn’t talked about (beforehand). Literally the last second I save my own life by just going ‘nooo’ (dodges).

“He just whips this trash can because he saw me, and that’s him thinking on the fly, and he whips the trash can. I had no idea, it wasn’t talked about, but it’s like the highlight of the match.”

Hornswoggle made his WWE debut in May 2006 and would remain with the company until his release in May 2016.

He would be the final WWE Cruiserweight Champion winning the belt from Chavo Guerrero in a Cruiserweight Open match that also featured Jimmy Wang Yang, Shannon Moore, Funaki and Jamie Noble at The Great American Bash in July 2007.

Since his departure, Hornswoggle has made cameo appearances for WWE including the 2018 Greatest Royal Rumble match, and the 2019 women’s Royal Rumble.

He’s also made one appearance for AEW, that being in 2020 for the Chris Jericho Inner Circle trip to Las Vegas skit.
