Vince Russo Claims Vince McMahon Cannot Write TV

Controversial former WWE and WCW writer Vince Russo has called out Vince McMahon for not knowing how to write for TV.

On a recent episode of Legion of Raw, Russo talked honestly about the WWE Chairman, noting that there are nuances to television writing that Russo himself only learnt from accomplished writers, such as Ed Ferrara.

Here is the quote, courtesy of Ringside News:

“This is it in a nutshell. I’m telling you. He (Vince McMahon) is not a television writer. He is not, bro; there is an art to television writing. And I’ll tell you that Chris, Ed Ferrara taught me a lot. Ed worked in Hollywood. He had written ‘Honey, I Shrunk the Kids’, Weird Science, he had written a couple of movies. Ed was a television writer. So, Ed really took me under his wing when it came to that aspect of storytelling and characters.”

One of the biggest complaints about WWE TV, with a few exceptions, is that the characters aren’t compelling, so Russo specifically mentioning storytelling and characters as key aspects of TV writing is intriguing.

The most recent episode of Raw saw an improvement in the ratings, with an average of 1.691 million viewers, compared to the previous week’s record low of 1.526 million viewers.

Still nowhere near where WWE wants their viewership to be, there needs to be a change for ratings to improve. Whether WWE produce more sophisticated content , or tackle ratings with a different approach, 2021 could be a fresh start for WWE’s weekly shows.
