War Games Style Match Coming To AEW?

Last night on AEW, Cody Rhodes delivered the Silver Spoon promo on AEW Dynamite.  While the majority of the promo was focused on his upcoming match with Chris Jericho at Full Gear, one line caught a few people’s ears.

Cody addressed the fight brewing between The Elite and The Inner Circle.  He stated when the two factions faced off it would be a “match beyond.”  Back when War Games was in the NWA, the match beyond was the portion of War Games where all the men from both teams had entered the ring.

WWE owns the rights to War Games, at least the name anyway.  WWE bought the naming rights from MLW.  MLW had purchased the rights to the name when WWE had originally let them go.

According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Cody and AEW actually own the trademark to “The Match Beyond.”  In a story earlier this year, Cody trademarked the names of many of his father’s ideas that WWE had let go or never owned.

We got a sneak peek of what an Inner Circle vs Elite brawl would look like.

While WWE has put on an NXT version of War Games, it hasn’t had the same brutality of those early War Game matches. The 4 Horsemen, Dusty Rhodes, and The NWA put on some of the most violent matches in history.

That’s not saying it isn’t great. Given a PG rating and the lack of ability to do blood in matches, it can make cage matches a little less intense.  AEW has shown a willingness to let performers get color.

It would be very interesting to see Cody’s take on his father’s idea.  Given how much he seems to be drawing from the past, I have no doubt the AEW Match Beyond would be really good.
