Kurt Angle appeared in a pre-taped backstage vignette on the 05/29 episode of Friday Night SmackDown, announcing Matt Riddle as the newest member of the blue brand’s roster. This came after he was the special guest referee for Riddle’s Cage Fight with Timothy Thatcher on the 05/27 episode of NXT.
In the days that followed, Riddle actually claimed that WWE pitched him the idea of managing Riddle on the main roster, but the former WWE Champion revealed that he turned down the opportunity for a number of years.
Speaking to Sports Illustrated, Angle speculated that the eventual plans would have seen him face Riddle in the future, after stating that he will likely never wrestle again:
“I’m almost 100% I won’t wrestle again, but if I did, that’s the direction I would have went,” Angle said. “I imagine WWE was going to go with me managing Riddle and then, eventually, probably a match between the two of us.”
If he doesn’t wrestle again, Angle’s last wrestling match would be against King Corbin at WrestleMania 35. While I’m sure Angle does want a better send-off, his body is likely just too banged up right now to consider stepping back into the ring. However, as they say in wrestling, never say never.
