Former WWE star Wesley Blake has revealed that during his NXT tenure, he was informed that Vince McMahon doesn’t like cowboy gimmicks.
In 2014, Wesley Blake made his NXT debut with a cowboy persona. Speaking on The Angle podcast, Blake stated that the character was scrapped after he was told that the WWE Chairman wasn’t a fan.
Recalling the beginning of his NXT career, Blake said:
“After about 6 months, I kind of got the impression or I was told that, ‘Hey Vince McMahon doesn’t really like cowboys. He thinks it’s kind of overdone especially in the wrestling business. We are going to have to switch up your character and pitching some more ideas.’”
Shortly after, Blake was repackaged in a tag team with Buddy Murphy. Blake and Murphy went on to win the NXT Tag Team Championship, holding the gold for over 200 days.
Blake and Murphy went their separate ways within WWE not long after losing their titles. Blake previously spoke about the split, noting at one point, he and Murphy were unsure whether they were still a team or not.
