Wesley Blake Explains What Ended NXT Run With Buddy Murphy

Former WWE star Wesley Blake has discussed what lead to the end of his and Buddy Murphy’s NXT tag team run.

In early 2015, Blake & Murphy defeated the Lucha Dragons to become NXT Tag Team Champions. By the end of 2016, the two performers had gone their separate ways within WWE.

In an interview with Wrestling Inc, Blake recalled Alexa Bliss leaving the team to pursue singles success. Discussing the end of the group, Blake said:

“I guess it’s just what creative wanted,” Blake said. “Once we dropped the NXT Tag Titles, they wanted to split Alexa away from us, so she could have her singles run. We were very happy for her because we knew she was going to be star. And so, we were still tagging but not getting any traction. We weren’t having any storylines on NXT, and then they slowly started putting us in singles matches.

“At one point, we were at odds and unsure if we’re still a team or not. And then eventually, they said Samoa Joe was going to come lay us out during a match. At the time, Buddy and I pitched the idea of wrestling each other, in a best-of-three or best-of-five series. But they didn’t want that. So, I just started doing my Beautiful Blake character and he moved onto 205 Live.”

Blake was released by WWE in April, while Murphy was let go in June. Blake has noted that he still talks to Murphy regularly and would be open to reuniting the team on the independent scene.
