Here’s What CM Punk Was Told To Say During AEW Debut Promo

Tony Schiavone has revealed what CM Punk was told to say during his AEW debut promo this past Friday on Rampage in Chicago.

It’s well known that AEW is nowhere near as scripted as WWE, and, in fact, there was only one thing Punk knew he had to mention.

That one thing was simply to mention Darby Allin and set up the match with him at All Out. The rest was all stuff Punk had the freedom to come up with himself.

Tony Khan has spoken about how he takes a “bullet point” approach to his wrestlers’ promos in terms of the things they have to mention, and the wrestlers themselves can come up with everything else around those bullet points.

So it seems Punk had the single bullet point to mention Allin and set up that match, and the rest was all him.

Speaking on What Happened When, Schiavone said:

“I talked to him about his promo and he said, ‘I really don’t know, I’ve been thinking about so many things to say, and I really don’t know what I’m going to say’.

“We just did know that the one thing he was gonna touch on was Darby to set up the pay-per-view match. From then on we had no idea what he was going to say or how he was going to say it. And, to be honest with you, he didn’t let us on. It really looked like to me he was really, really, really thinking about this hard and it had weighed on him for some time.”

Schiavone also spoke about how the plan for exactly how CM Punk would make his debut was changed on the day, and you can find out what the original plan was at this link.

Punk will be appearing on AEW Dynamite tonight for an interview with Schiavone.
