Goldberg officially had his final WWE match at today’s July 12 Saturday Night’s Main Event show in Atlanta, Georgia.
As had been built up since last October, Goldberg challenged GUNTHER for the World Heavyweight Championship in his retirement match.
In what was a pretty even match that went about 15 minutes, it was GUNTHER who emerged victorious, as Goldberg passed out in a sleeper hold.
Towards the end of the match, Goldberg inadvertently speared referee Charles Robinson, which led to some shenanigans unfolding.
First, GUNTHER confronted Goldberg’s son Gage at ringside, before GUNTHER got back in the ring to suffer a spear and Jackhammer from Goldberg.
With the new referee, Shawn Bennett, running to the ring, GUNTHER managed to kick out of the Jackhammer.
Not long after, the Austrian locked Goldberg in a sleeper hold, and the Hall of Famer passed out, with GUNTHER retaining his title.
After the match, Goldberg had about 30 seconds of a speech before the broadcast ended. He said:
“First off, I don’t think I’ve ever lost here in Atlanta, so I do apologize for going out a little sub-par.
“I’ve got over 100 friends and family that came in from all over the world, and I’ve just gotta say, I cannot thank y’all enough.
“The fans in Atlanta have been absolutely wonderful. I love you.
“I couldn’t have done it without you.”
The show then went off the air.
