When WWE Decided To Give Sasha Banks Raw Women’s Championship

Last night on Raw, Sasha Banks defeated Asuka via countout to win the Raw Women’s Championship in a rematch from The Horror Show at Extreme Rules earlier this month.

In a traditional match, Asuka would have retained the title as she wasn’t pinned or submitted, however, Stephanie McMahon announced last week that this match had no championship advantage.

There is no denying that the Sasha Banks and Bayley story is the best thing in WWE, regardless of gender, right now. So it’s great to see Banks and Bayley holding all of the main roster women’s title.

However, fans are pretty unhappy about Asuka’s title reign, in which she didn’t have a clean title defence. Many are concerned about where Asuka goes form here, following her Raw Women’s Championship loss.

Speaking on the latest Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer revealed when WWE made the call to give Sasha Banks the Raw Women’s Championship:

“Originally Asuka was supposed to defend the title at SummerSlam against whoever injured Kairi and that was as of at last Sunday night or Monday morning of the tapings when they tore all that up.”

As Meltzer states, it has been reported that Asuka was originally set to defend her Raw Women’s Championship against the person who wrote Kairi Sane off of TV, with names with as Nia Jax, Shayna Baszler and even Natalya being thrown about.
