The June 9 episode of WWE Raw saw Jey Uso lose the World Heavyweight Championship to GUNTHER, less than two months after he dethroned the Austrian for the same title at WrestleMania 41.
The result of the match saw Jey’s father Rikishi criticize the creative behind the move, with the WWE Hall of Famer recently addressing his comments.
Details have now emerged as to when WWE plans were put in motion to switch the title back to GUNTHER.
In the current issue of Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer revealed that plans were in place from around the time Uso first became World Heavyweight Champion, with GUNTHER always planned to be the one to dethrone Uso following a “short reign”.
Meltzer wrote:
When the decision was made to put the title on Uso, it had already been decided it would be short reign and that he would lose it back to Gunther.
Meltzer admitted he was “not sure” if the June 9 episode of WWE Raw in Phoenix, Arizona was always the date the title change was due to happen, but it had been planned to be ahead of GUNTHER’s match against Goldberg.
GUNTHER vs. Goldberg for the World Heavyweight Championship takes place at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event on July 12 in Atlanta, Georgia.
Goldberg has recently spoken about the challenges of the match against GUNTHER, marking the WWE Hall of Famer’s first since February 2022.
