Which WWE Stars Were Missing From WrestleMania

Despite two battle royals and a total of 16 matches plus several segments on last night’s marathon WrestleMania 35, several members of the roster did not make it to the card.

One of the most notable absentees was Kevin Owens, who was brought back into the fold on SmackDown earlier this year following injury and was inserted into the WWE Championship picture against Daniel Bryan at Fastlane. Owens was originally set to face Bryan at WrestleMania but was replaced by Kofi Kingston due to a swell of support for the New Day man. Owens was nowhere to be seen last night, which must have been a massive disappointment for the Canadian.

Another big name missing was The Undertaker, who had only previously missed two WrestleManias since 1991, which was WrestleMania X in 1994 and WrestleMania 2000 in 2000. His absence from the card marked the end of 18 consecutive years on the show. He has not wrestled since headlining Crown Jewel in November. Undertaker is rumoured to be returning to the ring for WWE in Saudi Arabia in June.

It was perhaps less of a surprise that Dean Ambrose was not involved. It is no secret that Ambrose is on his way out of the promotion when his contract expires later this month and chances are he will not be seen on WWE television again.

2017 Andre The Giant Battle Royal winner Mojo Rawley has not been featured on television for months but had been featured in intriguing vignettes on Raw in recent weeks. It was thought that he would be involved in this year’s battle royal but it seems WWE are saving his return, perhaps for this evening’s Raw.

Less easy to explain was Sanity’s omission. There was no good reason for them to not be involved in the battle royal, especially given some of the other names that were in the match. Is the writing on the wall for the group in WWE or are they being saved for a repackage?

Sin Cara, Sami Zayn and Fandango were all missing due to injury. As was Akam of AOP. His absence meant Rezar also missed out. Alicia Fox is currently in the bad books due to her alleged refusal to attend rehab following the house show incident that led to Arn Anderson’s firing.

Dolph Ziggler is on sabbatical, doing comedy show tours across the country. His WWE future remains unclear. As does Goldust’s. Although he denied reports that he was on his way out of WWE, we are led to believe that he is leaving the promotion imminently.

The Colons were both missing too. Neither has been on television for an age. Quite why they are still employed is anyone’s guess.

Bray Wyatt has been teasing a return to the ring since the Royal Rumble and has still not surfaced. His new haircut suggests a comeback is on the cards sooner rather than later but evidently WWE felt WrestleMania was not the time for it.

Kane and The Big Show are barely part-timers for WWE these days but both do make the occasional appearance for the company on occasion. Kane turned up at last year’s Andre the Giant Battle Royal and would have added some star power to the match, as would the bout’s former winner Show. WWE clearly felt differently. It was the first time in 25 years that one of these two and The Undertaker has not be on the card.
