More details have emerged on the impromptu pitch for Monday’s (May 16) WWE Raw main event, following Sasha Banks & Naomi walking out.
Originally planned for the show was a six pack challenge featuring Sasha, Naomi, Becky Lynch, Asuka, Nikki ASH and Doudrop, with Naomi slated to win, earning herself a Raw Women’s Championship match at Hell in a Cell.
Previous reports noted that Vince McMahon found out that Sasha and Naomi had left at the start of the live broadcast, with Lynch in part pitching the eventual main event, herself vs Asuka.
In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Meltzer confirmed that Lynch had pitched the match. With WWE wanting to save a one-on-one match between Lynch and Bianca Belair for a later date, Asuka was chosen to win, earning the title shot:
“A suggestion was made, reportedly by Lynch, to have Lynch vs. Asuka in a singles match for the title shot. Because they are trying to avoid a straight singles match with Belair and Lynch until a major PPV show, Lynch couldn’t win here, so Asuka pinned Lynch after blowing green mist in her eyes when Lynch at first tried to use Asuka’s umbrella as a foreign object.”
Per the report, WWE talent couldn’t understand why the two stars decided to walk, with both names slated for top matches at the upcoming Premium Live Event, which you can read more about right here.
