Late last week, it was revealed that along with Sonya Deville and Carmella, Ronda Rousey would be joining the ninth season of Total Divas.
Per WWE’s official statement, Rousey will not only have a main role in the series, but will also serve as an Executive Producer, along with Nikki Bella.
Many people were unhappy and confused about why Rousey joined the cast. Fans felt as if her bad-ass gimmick didn’t suit appearing on a reality TV show.
The former Raw Women’s Champion has also not been seen on WWE TV since WrestleMania 35.
However, PWInsider have given a possible reason as to why WWE wanted Rousey on the show, and it certainly makes sense:
“It’s quite simple. She’s a name and they want to use her to try and draw ratings on E! So why is Ronda Rousey around? Well, Ronda Rousey is a name they can utilize to gain attention. Ronda Rousey will get far more mainstream media attention than Natalya or Carmella or Nia Jax no matter how much we might enjoy them as personalities or as wrestlers. They are not mainstream celebrities who are doing Fox TV shows and starring in movies with Marky Mark.”
Rousey has recently landed a role in FOX’s 9-1-1 drama. According to reports, WWE wants to capitalise on her relationship with FOX by having her appear on Smackdown Live’s debut on the network.
However, WWE also reportedly don’t want her making just a one-off appearance, but want her to have a comeback match in the near future.
