Will Ospreay Set To Break NJPW Record Next Month

British wrestling sensation Will Ospreay is arguably on the best run of anyone else in the entire industry right now. Last week Ospreay not only won the Best of the Super Juniors tournament, but he also went on to capture the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Championship a few days later.

Ospreay’s impressive wins against Shingo Takagi in the tournament finals and Dragon Lee in the subsequent championship match were handed 5.75 and 5-star ratings respectively by Dave Meltzer.

Like many other wrestling fans and critics, Meltzer is clearly very high on Will Ospreay at the moment, even somewhat boldly suggesting he is better than IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada.

Ospreay is set to continue his momentum with a good showing in next month’s NJPW G1 Climax. The tournament is set to kick off on July 6 in Dallas, Texas.

Pending any injuries, this will be the third tournament Will Ospreay has participated in this year for New Japan. Ospreay took part in the New Japan Cup at the beginning of the year which was won by Kazuchika Okada, and obviously the Best of the Super Juniors most recently, which he ended up winning.

A fan on Twitter alerted Ospreay to the fact that if he does go ahead with his appearance in the G1 Climax, then he will be the first wrestler in history to take part in every single one of NJPW’s annual singles tournaments.

The Super J-Cup has not taken place since 2016 when it was won by KUSHIDA, now of NXT-fame. The tournament featuring the best junior heavyweights from all across the globe was created by NJPW legend Jushin Thunder Liger, and is set to return this year at the end of August.

Many people have speculated that after winning the Best of the Super Juniors, Ospreay is all but guaranteed a place in that tournament later this summer too. This will mean that he has competed in four separate singles tournaments for the Japanese promotion.
