William Regal Names Former WWE Star As ‘The One That Got Away’ AEW

AEW star William Regal has named a former WWE star as “the one that got away”.

Before his WWE release in January 2022, William Regal worked as WWE Director of Talent Development and Head of Global Recruiting.

Regal was a key figure in the acquisition of many popular signees for WWE over the course of his time in the position.

Seeing numerous talents during his time in WWE and the NXT brand, Regal saying someone’s ability far exceeds their overall career trajectory means something.

On the latest episode of the Gentleman Villain podcast, the AEW star described Damien Sandow aka Aron Stevens as one such star that he found to be “magic”.

“I do believe Damien Sandow was — he was far better than his career ended up being. Damien Sandow was absolutely magic and special in everything he was given.”

“If anything, that’s why I liked him so much, he was like me. Is he going to be the top guy like Seth Rollins, Jon Moxley, and Roman Reigns? Maybe not.”

“Is he going to be a perfect player on your show, do anything, and make anything work? Yes.”

Regal continued on to describe Sandow as someone he believed would have a job in wrestling “forever”, saying:

“I don’t like to say certain things but that was — I always thought that he would have a job in wrestling, at a high level, forever. When I say ‘high level,’ I mean in a top company, because he could do anything and blend in with anybody.”

“He can pull off good comedy, and I like to consider myself one of those. he was just brilliant at it.”

Mentioning the members of The Shield in comparison to Sandow, Regal stated:

“The others have gone on to do well. The guys you mentioned became The Shield and look what’s happened to them. They were all great and I think the world of all of them. They were all great to be around at that point in time.”

“In FCW, there were always polite, respectful, asked the right questions, and did the right things. Damien Sandow was just the one that got away.”

Damien Sandow won the Money In The Bank contract in 2013, but he became the second competitor to not successfully cash in when he lost to John Cena for the World Heavyweight Championship.

Damien Sandow would go on to be known by his real name Aron Stevens during a brief stint in IMPACT Wrestling before resurfacing in NWA where he is still active today.

Meanwhile, William Regal is the leader of the Blackpool Combat Club in AEW, which includes Bryan Danielson, Claudio Castagnoli, Wheeler Yuta and AEW World Champion Jon Moxley.

Moxley will defend his title against MJF this Saturday, November 19 at AEW Full Gear.
