WrestleTalk Exclusive Interview: Alan Angels – The Kick-Out That Got The World Talking

Alan Angels took part in one of the most talked-about matches in quite some time on the April 22, 2020 edition of AEW: Dynamite. When he kicked out of a V-Trigger from Kenny Omega, some of the world’s most famous wrestling pundits weighed in to discuss if that was a smart move by AEW.

WrestleTalk.com’s Nate Craver had the chance to speak with Alan and discuss his appearance on the show. What did Alan think about kicking out of one of Omega’s most famous moves? Did he think Twitter would explode?

“Man. I wouldn’t say I thought that, but I definitely thought there would be some criticism for it or whatever. It wasn’t like the first thing people were talking about on the internet either after the match. It was like two 3 days after everybody was like flipping out  over me kicking out at 2. The kickout heard around the world or whatever. It’s just, like, I don’t really have an opinion on it. I see where a lot of people are coming from with it. Where as maybe I shouldn’t have kicked out of it. And, maybe the match shouldn’t have been as long as it was, but you know, it’s also me. So, like, I’m not going to say no to something like that and it got people talking about me. I got a good amount of followers on the Twitter and stuff. So, I don’t regret anything that happened.  I’m glad it happened. I did not think the internet would blow like it did about it. But, you know, I’m glad it did. I’m not complaining or anything”

Did he and Kenny discuss any of this after the match?

“You know, we talked after the match. I asked him how everything was. He said everything was great. Everything was fine. He said it was a good match. I asked if he had any advice for me. He said not right off the top of his head. After that not really. We didn’t talk much after it.”

During the match, Chris Jericho went full Jericho and butchered Angels’ name. How did Alan feel about Jericho and the inability to keep his name straight?

“If you watch the video. If you watch the whole match, at the beginning, he actually called me Alan Angels two times or whatever. And then he just goes on the worn off path of Alan Eagles and Alan Angles. He said a bunch things a few times. I guess he was just messing around. But, I thank him for it because I’m going to make a shirt out of this and I’m going to try and sell it on ProWrestlingTees. So, hopefully, that sells well. I’ve Jericho’s influence behind it. So, hopefully, it will do good numbers.”

One of the things people always want to know about wrestling companies is what is the backstage atmosphere. Is the moral good? Do people like working there?  Angels had the following to say:

“It’s such an awesome atmosphere back there man. I tell you what that locker room is unlike any. I’ve been backstage. I’ve done extra stuff for NXT and Ring of Honor and stuff like that. But, I mean, the atmosphere at AEW backstage is just super positive. Everybody loves it there and everyone is super friendly. I can’t say enough about good stuff about the AEW locker room.”

In speaking with him, Angels came across as a grateful young man who just wants to make a name for himself as a wrestler. He came across as genuine and fan of wrestling. He seems like he has a very bright future ahead of him and we wish him the very best.

The full interview will be up soon on our WrestleTalk Interview YouTube Channel.

***One thing you’ll notice is that I said this was Angels’ AEW Debut. He actually debuted two weeks prior in a quick match against Lance Archer. That was a match he would probably like to forget since he didn’t really get any offense in.  I covered NXT that week. So, I do apologize for the error.
