The backstage reactions in WWE and AEW to Stephanie Vaquer’s signing and recent in-ring debut have been revealed.
Back in June, Stephanie Vaquer took part in a major match at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door, when she faced off with Mercedes Mone in a double title match for the AEW TBS and NJPW STRONG Women’s Championships.
Vaquer ended up losing her title to Mone, before she quickly signed with WWE following the show, with her making her official debut for the NXT brand on this week’s show.
The speed at which Vaquer went from wrestling at Forbidden Door to signing with WWE was very surprising, and there has now been an update on the reactions to her signing and debut.
Per Fightful Select (subscription required), those around the Mexican wrestling scene are of the belief that Vaquer will not need to return to the scene, and exited accordingly.
Those in AEW noted that she made a good impression with her feud with Mercedes, but could tell shortly after the show that WWE had reached out, and that she would eventually head to the company, though the speed at which it came together surprised many.
Those in AEW said that they understood the element of WWE wanting a great talent that they were also after, but didn’t understand the element of pulling her from CMLL dates before she could drop the title she needed to drop.
However, when she quickly turned around and wrestled on the WWE live events in Mexico, that alleviated some of the criticism compared to her simply being signed and pulled from shows.
So far, WWE have appeared to be very happy with Vaquer, and she appears to be enjoying her time there.
AEW and NJPW sources noted that they believe it’s likely that talent that work Forbidden Door, or other co-promoted AEW shows, in the future would have to make an agreement to not immediately go to WWE, but that has not been confirmed within the company.
Vaquer is set to team with Giulia against NXT Women’s Champion Roxanne Perez and Cora Jade at NXT Halloween Havoc next weekend.
