AJ Lee has opened up about her relationship with husband CM Punk, including one off script moment during a backstage WWE segment.
The pair, who first met during their first runs in WWE, started dating in August 2013 and would go on to get married in June the following year.
Speaking on What’s Your Story? with Stephanie McMahon, AJ Lee reflected on the beginning of their relationship and an off script moment Punk did that she thought was “so cool”:
“We dated probably two years after our storyline. Our first kiss was on television, then I put him through a table. Wrestling relationships.
“Early on I think he respected me. In NXT, he was one of the announcers, and everyone else would s**t on us. He would always be like ‘but AJ’s cool’, he was always like putting me over, and I think he just knew I always loved wrestling.
“When we did the storyline together, he was meant to say something really mean to me in one of the backstages that was going on live, and it was live, but he didn’t say the mean thing, he just hit on me or something. He wasn’t supposed to. I was like ‘That was so cool.’ It was not in the script, but he took care of me, so I thought that was really, really nice.”
After commenting on the speed in which they went from dating to officially married, AJ recalled a random thought of wanting to marry Punk long before then:
“We were friends first, dating other people, and then once we were single at the same time, part of me was like ‘who knows, we’ll try this out’. And then I blinked, and we were married in like two months or something like that.
“I do remember when we were just friends, we were talking at a restaurant one time, and he was saying something like he knows he’s never going to get married, and a weird voice in my head went ‘you’re going to marry me’. And I was like ‘b**h, shut up, who was that?’ And then I didn’t talk to him for like a year, I was freaked out by that.”

Punk continues to be proud of his now-wife, with footage recently showing his reaction to AJ Lee returning on last week’s WWE Raw to help Maxxine Dupri become Women’s Intercontinental Champion.
AJ Lee would also discuss a past exchange that she had on social media with Stephanie McMahon, with equal pay being to the heart of the subject.
CM Punk and AJ Lee will both be in action at WWE Survivor Series WarGames on November 29, competing in the titular men’s and women’s matches, respectively.
