Former Champion’s Son Potentially Attending WWE Tryout Update

An update has emerged on the son of a former champion potentially getting a WWE tryout following their recent in-ring debut.

Avery Styles – the son of AJ Styles – competed in his first-ever match at Squared Circle Action on June 26, going on to file a trademark application for his in-ring name.

Since then, there has been a lot of talk about Avery’s potential in pro-wrestling, with there even being some speculation that he could soon attend a WWE tryout, given that his father’s recent coaching work at the Performance Center.

During a recent episode of Insight with Chris Van Vliet, AJ Styles shared his hope that Avery could get a WWE tryout in the future.

Believing that Avery is not ready yet, AJ explained:

“I hope that he does at some point, but he’s not ready yet. I don’t. My job is to make him ready and teach him the little things that we want to see as coaches.

“There’s been plenty of guys that even myself have went for tryouts, and they say, ‘Hey, we don’t care about the high-flying moves, we just want to see what you can do.’

“I had no idea what they were talking about, and now, being that guy, I get it. It’s the little things in between that we want to see that if you do it well, and that’s the hardest thing to learn, is the in between.”

Avery Styles has an intriguing match-up scheduled for later this month, facing off against his dad’s former teammates Doc Gallows and Karl Anderson, alongside CJ Gallows – Doc Gallows’ son.

Retired as an in-ring competitor, AJ Styles remains under contract with WWE and has recently revealed he is “wearing a couple of different hats” in a backstage capacity that includes elements of coaching and recruitment.

More Than Just The Moves

For any future star stepping into the WWE ecosystem, it seems that the company are looking for someone who is more than just cool moves.

Previously shared footage from tryouts has shown plenty of physical activity for every attendee, with an apparent focus on physical endurance, alongside the other aspects that one might expect to see from a future star.

In an ideal world, it’d be great to think that anybody invited to a tryout arrives in a fully-formed package, ready to go, but that isn’t necessarily what WWE are looking for. With WWE casting its net far beyond just the wrestling world, the coaches are clearly looking for a package that they can mold into a television-ready star. Indeed, Dominik Mysterio has previously stated that “adaptability” is the most important skill to succeed.

Not every talent that steps into the world of the tryout is going to have the strong in-ring abilities, microphone skills and character that a television-ready star will have, but that’s not what the coaches are necessarily looking for. Their focus remains on potential, knowing that, for the successful stars, the rest can come through a Performance Center that is committed to success.
