A WWE star has revealed they were initially hesitant over a character change, but went on to fully commit to the portrayal.
Apollo Crews turned heel in February 2021, going on to declare himself as a member of Nigerian royalty.
With the change of character seeing him head to WrestleMania 27, Crews defeated Big E for the Intercontinental Championship in a Nigerian Drum Fight.
Crews has shared his thoughts on the character, revealing his initial hesitancy before stating it was the “most fun” he has had in his career, sharing an Instagram post reading:
“I was initially hesitant, but embracing this character became some of the most fun I’ve had throughout my wrestling career.
“I committed not only to performing to the best of my ability, but taking my physique to a different level as well.”
Allied with Commander Azeez, the pair would be seen on Main Event before heading back to NXT, with Crews returning to his face role and losing his Nigerian accent in June 2022.
Crews was recently seen on the January 24 episode of WWE SmackDown, defeating Johnny Gargano, and holds two televised victories over Giovanni Vinci, with their longest of those matches going just over 90 seconds.
Having undergone surgery for a torn pectoral muscle in February, Crews has previously revealed that he is “crushing the rehab” as he prepares for an in-ring return.
Crews was drafted to SmackDown in 2024, forming a tag team with Baron Corbin before the star’s departure in November of that year.
