There’s been a number of WWE stars who only have one name and sometimes it works… other times, it is just “weird”.
One such name was Austin Theory, who had been Austin Theory since wrestling debut in 2016.
He would bring the name with him when he signed with WWE in 2019 and continue to use it until April 2022.
From then on, he would just be known as Theory.
The rumors at the time were that it was to prevent any confusion between Austin Theory and Stone Cold Steve Austin.
The name would stick until Triple H became Head of WWE Creative in July 2022.
By September, Theory was back to being Austin Theory.
Triple H recently criticized the logic of the initial name change in an interview with ESPN, saying:
“It’s a little bit hard to just refer to him as Theory.
“And even to me, it was a little awkward when he was announced, like ‘Theory!’ It’s weird.”
The awkward mononym aside, Triple H also mocked the belief that fans could confuse Austin Theory for Stone Cold, adding:
“Is that Stone Cold Steve Austin coming in? Is it confusing for fans?
“I’m of the opinion that if you don’t know the difference between Austin Theory and Stone Cold Steve Austin, there’s already a problem, right? So, we’re fixing the wrong end of the problem.”
Both Theory and Austin have shared the ring before and there was certainly no confusion as to who was who, with Austin Theory being on the receiving end of a Stone Cold Stunner at WrestleMania 38.
As the ESPN feature points out, Austin Theory is “WWE’s youngest active champion and the younger wrestler on the roster who is consistently featured in TV main events.”
He is the current WWE United States Champion, having retained against Seth Rollins, with assistance from a returning Brock Lesnar, at WWE Raw’s 30th Anniversary show on January 23.
