It was reported yesterday by Fightful Select, and then by other sources shortly after, that WWE is hoping to have Stone Cold Steve Austin wrestle his first match in 19 years at this year’s WrestleMania 38 show.
The reported opponent for this match is Kevin Owens, and according to Dave Meltzer, many within WWE are under the impression the match is going ahead.
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer said:
“The impression I have is the match is on. I know that backstage at WWE all day, that’s all I kept hearing about. Not ‘all’ I kept hearing about, but, I heard it early in the day and then kept checking around and more people were saying they heard the same thing. I don’t know that it’s a done deal, but people were talking like it was.
“Like I said, I was not told that it was a done deal, but people were under the assumption that it was, and that promo clearly tells you that they are booking with the idea that it is happening.”

The promo Meltzer mentioned was cut by Owens on last night’s episode of Raw, where he shot on Texas, which is both Steve Austin’s home state, and also where WrestleMania 38 is taking place.
According to PWInsider’s latest report, WWE reached out to Austin at the end of December/beginning of January to gauge his interest in wrestling, or even just making an appearance at the show.
The hope is that an Austin match in Texas would massively help boost ticket sales. WWE would need to sell around 200,000 tickets to sell out both nights of the two-night show.
One match Austin will definitely be having is on WWE 2k22, which he has been confirmed for. You can check out the full 2K22 roster here.
