NWA owner Billy Corgan has cast doubt over the possibility of WWE selling a particular company in a recent interview.
With names ranging from Disney to Netflix to Comcast being thrown around as potential buyers, Corgan raised an eye brow at one particular company, even invoking Vince McMahon’s “No Chance in Hell” as the possibility of it happening.
Speaking on the WrestlingNews Co podcast, the NWA owner addressed AEW merging with WWE, saying:
“Stranger things have happened, color me wrong.
“It’s the world of professional wrestling and we are talking about billions of dollars here, and not a lot of people on the planet have billions of dollars to spend plus want to be in professional wrestling.
“Anything is possible of course, but that’s the one where I sort of raised an eyebrow and thought, ‘No, that’s not happening.'”
Corgan would go on to praise the influence that Tony Khan has had on the wrestling scene since the creation of AEW, concluding:
“The things that have shifted in the last five years for that audience, and I am using that term loosely, is they see where WWE isn’t the only kid on the block anymore.
“Tony coming in and doing what he has done with AEW … he’s at has loosened up the market when they think, okay now there’s room for other people to come in.
“20 years ago no one would have imagined that.”
Khan has recently stated that he is watching the WWE sale “very closely”.
He would later address his interest further, saying “I am interested in the news that there is potentially a sales process and certainly, I think we’ve shown, when there are acquisitions and transactions, we’re capable of making the big purchases.”
He would cite the purchase of Jacksonville Jaguars and the soccer team Fulham FC as proof of Shahid Khan and his acquisition abilities.
