Former WWE Champion Biopic Update

Former WWE Champion Biopic Update WWE

An update has emerged on the biopic of a former WWE Women’s Champion that is set to appear on Netflix, based on her memoirs.

In July 2024, Ronda Rousey revealed that she was penning a biopic based on her own memoirs, with a first draft being submitted to Netflix.

The movie now has a director in place along with a production company after a lengthy attempt to bring it to the screen.

According to Deadline, Augustine Frizzell will direct the movie, with Chernin Entertainment serving as producers.

Originally pitched in 2015 as Paramount project, the rights would lapse with Netflix securing them thanks to Rousey fan and studio executive Michelle Evans.

Back in 2015, the movie would have been based on My Fight/Your Fight, the memoir written by Rousey and Maria Burns-Ortiz.

Since then, however, Rousey and Burns-Ortiz have written Our Fight which was published in 2024 and will now form part of the movie project along with her original memoir.

Augustine Frizzell was the director of the HBO teen drama television series Euphoria and directed two episodes of Sweetbitter for Starz.

The Deadline article notes that Frizzell is a fan of Ronda Rousey and read both memoirs before getting a call to meet to discuss the movie.

Outside of her interest in Rousey, Frizzell is also trained in Muay Thai, which should lend itself well to capturing the MMA career of the former WWE star.

Frizzell is set to direct episodes of the upcoming Netflix series The Boroughs, having previously directed the 2021 British romantic drama The Last Letter from Your Lover.

Rousey chose to script the biopic herself having started working in the WME (William Morris Endeavor) story group department where she learned about scriptwriting structure and technique.

Deadline notes that Rousey was able to write the script in just seven days, which “shocked her agents” for the achievement as a first-time writer.

Rousey left WWE after SummerSlam 2023, with it recently being reported that the company was interested in doing “something” with her.
