WWE’s Booker T has responded to AEW’s Ricochet’s response to Booker’s claim wrestling has too much ‘finisher spam’.

On his WWE Hall of Fame podcast, Booker T and his co-host Brad Gilmore gave their thoughts on the current state of wrestling, with Gilmore noting that he believes there is too much ‘finisher spam’ in wrestling.

The quote made headlines on social media, with AEW star Ricochet responding to the claim, saying that he and the rest of the AEW roster take more inspiration from Anime and video game fights.

Booker T Responds To Ricochet’s ‘Finisher Spam’ Take

Responding to Ricochet’s claim on his Hall of Fame Podcast, Booker said he understood Ricochet’s perspective, just that he and Ricochet see wrestling in different ways, and that a wrestling show should build to a ‘crescendo’ rather than giving everything away in the opening match.

He said:

“I wasn’t look for a fight with Ricochet or anything, but Ricochet came back, and people say Ricochet ‘fires back’ at Booker T, I think Ricochet was just stating his opinion on what he thinks about wrestling.

“As far as, what was it Dragon Ball Z? I got the video game, I’m the king of video games, I know about all of that stuff. I get where Ricochet is coming from as far as this generation and what those guys go out and do, but my opinion is not gonna change about the way I see professional wrestling.

“Do I think there’s a place on the show for certain things to be done more than other places? Yes because it’s trying to get to (a crescendo). It’s not going to start in a car chase for me, for me I’m not going to put the first match out there and say ‘go out there, I need you guys doing dives over the top, I need chair shots, bring the trash can out, kicking out of everything’, because we’ve still got a main event.

“That’s what I’m talking about in terms of a crescendo as far as where we’re trying to go as far as this show goes. Do I understand where Ricochet is coming from? Yes, I get it, I understand it, these young guys today, they see this business totally different than I do.

“I had this one kid he came up to me, he said ‘hey boss, the CM Punk match vs. Roman, what did you think about it?’ I go ‘man, hell of a match, top ten matches at WrestleMania of all time’, and he looks at me and he goes ‘but they didn’t do anything’.

“That’s what you need to try and find, that’s what you’re looking for, to try and be able to find exactly that, so I get it. I’m still gonna teach it to the young guys, whether they use it or not is on them, but the ones I’m working with, that I’m trying to give that knowledge to, to be able to use your tools when you need to. Have that tool bag and be able to go in and shock and amaze the crowd whenever you need to, you just don’t need to do it every night with every move, that’s the only thing I’m saying.”

Is There Too Much ‘Finisher Spam’ In Wrestling?

Over the past decade, there has become an increase in discussion about whether or not the modern generation of wrestlers are doing ‘too much’ in their matches.

The discussion typically spans from older wrestlers critiquing the modern AEW style of wrestling, which has led to AEW finding it’s own identity over the past 6 years as an alternative from the standard WWE match formula.

While there are often times where AEW matches feel similar, the main issue with the matches and shows is repeating spots and finishes to matches, with the high energy, fast paced style appealing to the fanbase AEW has cultivated.

There may never be a definitive answer as to which style of wrestling is ‘correct’, such is the beauty of the sport, but there is almost certainly a promotion in the industry presenting wrestling in every person’s ideal way, whether that be WWE, AEW, Japan or on the independents.
