WWE Hall Of Famer Reveals What Killed Old School Wrestling Gimmicks WWE

A WWE Hall of Famer has revealed that moment in wrestling that killed a lot of gimmicks, reflecting on a need to “change with the times”.

Booker T discussed the old-school “occupational” gimmick, which gave us characters like IRS, Isaac Yankem, DDS and The Undertaker on a recent episode of the Hall of Fame.

Looking at one of the aspects that changed in the business when the nWo arrived, Booker T explored the near-death of occupational gimmicks, saying:

“Once the NWO and stuff started happening you couldn’t be doing stuff like that anymore.

“Can you imagine being Glacier on the same roster with the nWo? Can you imagine that, good God man?”

Glacier’s long build to his debut unfortunately landed in an era when the nWo would rise to prominence.

The clearly Mortal Kombat themed wrestler arguably looked out of place against the grittier grouping of Hogan, Hall and Nash.

His WCW Nitro debut can be seen below this news story.

Discussing the subject of this sort of gimmick further, Booker T said:

“I would not say those gimmicks did not get over, they kind of faded away.

“They were there for their time, it worked for their time. I wouldn’t necessarily say they didn’t work or they didn’t get over, they got over and it worked, only for a certain amount of time of course, because the time changed.”

Booker T would suggest that WWE are trying to recapture the past with the appearance of Lacey Evans in her controversial Sgt Slaughter-themed ring attire, but conceded:

“It’s just so hard for me to go back to that time. I just feel like if you don’t change with the times, the times will pass you by.”

The WWE Hall of Famer has also spoken about the ownership of military-themed gimmicks, saying that Slaughter doesn’t have any say in the matter.
