WWE Champion Thought He Would Leave WWE After His Injury

NXT Cruiserweight Champion Santos Escobar has revealed that wrestling for WWE has always been his goal. However, he has said that he thought his WWE career was going to be derailed.

In a recent appearance on the Getting Over podcast, Escobar talked about his knee injury, which he suffered in 2019. He mentioned that he thought he would have to go back to Mexico as a result. Here is the quote, courtesy of Fightful:

“When I got injured, I thought, ‘I’m going to have to go back to Mexico, get myself fixed, and seek another opportunity.’ They told me, ‘No, you’re staying. We’re going to fix you and you’re staying.’ For that, I will be forever thankful. So many people say that this is a cutthroat business, and it is in some aspects, but every now and then you find this kind of situation and it overwhelmed me. The last two or three years in Mexico, I was working 300+ days a year. That’s no different than a WWE schedule, so I was ready for it, then the first thing I do is get injured.

It was a bummer. I was depressed and someone told me, ‘Maybe this is a blessing in disguise.’ At the time, I didn’t see it like that, but then I saw that maybe it was and I needed to adapt to WWE and understand how things are run. I got the opportunity to meet everyone at the Performance Center, be at the tapings and the live shows. It gave me the opportunity to slow down and learn what the company is about. When my time came, I was eager to show my abilities. It was the best thing to happen; to mix Lucha Libre and WWE,”

Santos Escobar has been the NXT Cruiserweight Champion since defeating Drake Maverick to win the vacant title last year.
