WWE Claims Ashley Massaro Reached Out To Them Late Last Year

WWE has claimed in a statement sent to The Blast that the late Ashley Massaro reached out to them in October last year, apologising for taking part in a class action concussion lawsuit against the promotion.

WWE has released snippets of an email sent to the company by Massaro after the lawsuit was thrown out, seemingly inferring that her days as a performer in WWE aren’t to blame for the former star’s death.

“I love WWE, you all were my family the whole time I was there. The lawsuit got out of control very fast. I had been roped in by the lawyer representing the others.”

According to WWE, Massaro “formally apologised” and “expressed regret” in the email for being part of the lawsuit and accepted “my part of the responsibility”.

Massaro went on to say that she had doubts over being part of the lawsuit but felt like she was pushed into it:

“I knew it was a bad idea but was convinced by the lawyer and I want to acknowledge that I should’ve contacted you guys before agreeing to be involved. I was basically poached.”

WWE also sent a statement to The Blast which read:

“Long after Ashley Massaro filed an affidavit, which WWE only learned of the contents after she passed away, Ashley sent an email to WWE on Oct. 20, 2018 – approximately one month after the Court dismissed all claims against WWE and sanctioned the lawyer who brought the suit against WWE, Konstantine Kyros, for repeated misconduct including pursuing false allegations.”

While the content of this email sent by Massaro to WWE may indeed be accurate, the timing of the promotion releasing it comes across as a PR move designed to shift any perceived blame for her early death away from them.

While the circumstances surrounding her death are not yet fully known, the belief is that Massaro – who was suffering from depression and other mental health issues – committed suicide.

WWE was hauled over the coals by John Oliver last month for the high number of early deaths in wrestling and several mainstream reports on Massaro’s passing have mentioned her involvement in a class action concussion lawsuit against WWE.

Massaro’s lawsuit affidavit cited physical injuries sustained in the ring, migraines and suffering with depression among the issues caused by her time in wrestling.

Given the timing, the release of the email snippets and statement comes across as WWE looking for exoneration from anyone attempting to make a link between the claims made in the lawsuit and Massaro’s death.
