Surprising Past Pitch For CM Punk

Surprising Past Pitch For CM Punk AEW

There was once a pitch for a change in gimmick for CM Punk so strange that it makes more sense for the people involved to tell it.

On a recent edition of Busted Open Radio, hosts Tommy Dreamer and Mickie James recalled a time in which the latter and Punk were considered for an act together.

Not just any act however, specifically an incarnation of Team Xtreme, the infamous pairing of the Hardy Boyz and Lita.

With Dreamer first recounting a match featuring CM Punk and Mickie James tagging together going okay but the concept falling apart backstage after a chat with then Head of Talent Relations, John Laurinaitis.

Dreamer said of the encounter after the pair’s dark match on Sunday Night Heat:

“You guys come to the back, the match wasn’t the best, it wasn’t your or Punk’s fault, but then Johnny’s like ‘Where’s all your dives and sentons?'”

“And Punk’s like ‘Have you never watched any of my stuff? I don’t do that.’ And Johnny was pissed because he thought you two guys had this cool look and you’d be a great pairing together as this new Team Xtreme. But being judged right then and there was ‘See you later.'”

Mickie James went on to weigh in on the tale herself, saying:

“We got to the back, and Hunter was actually the one that pulled us aside and was like ‘You’re awesome,'”

“‘You’re awesome. You two together? Don’t get it.’ And I’m like ‘Yeah, I get that.’ I just assumed it was based on the stuff we did with Raven at TNA, as part of being The Gathering.”
