‘The Energy Was Crazy’ – WWE Star Reveals Reaction To CM Punk Championship Win

A WWE star has revealed that they were up close and personal with the fans as they witnessed CM Punk return on this week’s Raw.

The July 6 episode of Raw not only saw CM Punk return in Los Angeles, but also saw the star defeat Sami Zayn to become Undisputed WWE Champion.

Joining the fans to witness the moment at the Allstate Arena was Je’Von Evans, who reflected on that moment while speaking on ROAR Around the Ring.

Evans would admit that he couldn’t just stay behind the scenes to watch the match, and reflected on the return of ‘Papa Punk’, saying:

“Crazy. So, I didn’t even know he was there, and then they did the gate. I was like ‘Yo, Papa Punk, uh-oh, he’s back!’ And then I went out there to watch the match. The energy was so high, I couldn’t stay in the back to watch it. I had to go out there and actually be a fan.

“Sometimes we have to be fans, that really helps us out. The energy was crazy, and when he won… I don’t even know, bro. I went crazy, I started running, it was insane. It was great, man. I’m so happy for him, and I’m happy that he’s back.”

Sami Zayn, by contrast, has a very different view of CM Punk as Undisputed WWE Champion, sharing his thoughts in comments made after Raw.

The Fan Perspective Matters

Seeing the show from the fan perspective is no doubt an important aspect of how any particular show, match, promo or moment is being perceived, and the easiest way to do that is to be among the crowd.

It is, of course, possible to gauge reaction from backstage, but being up close to the reaction, positive or negative, and feeling the energy that the audience brings is the sort of thing that has made live events over many decades, if not centuries.

Far more fans watch events on television, but there’s still a certain joy in seeing a wrestling show with live crowds, even if it is being watched from many miles away on a TV screen. Compare any recent episode of Raw, Smackdown, NXT, AEW Dynamite or Collision and now contrast it to the same shows running during the ‘no fans’ COVID-19 era, and the difference should be obvious: no matter who is in the ring, being unable to react to the live audience robs something from the whole spectacle.

The live wrestling audience has created moments, be it the Raw After WrestleMania, specific chants aimed at any given star, or hearing Dominik Mysterio being assailed by boos the very moment he gets the mic. Then there’s the reactions to the match results themselves; who can forget the reaction of the fans at WrestleMania 30 when Brock Lesnar broke The Undertaker’s streak?

Ultimately, the on-screen product is there because of the fans who want to see it and that live reaction will always be something that is important.
