Former WWE Star Reveals What Dusty Rhodes Really Thought of Cody Rhodes WWE

A former WWE star has revealed what the legendary Dusty Rhodes really thought about his son Cody Rhodes being a wrestler.

Currently signed to AEW, Shawn Spears had two runs in WWE, with his first starting in 2006 and involving time in Ohio Vally Wrestling, the WWE developmental territory.

It was during this period that he would team with the then-Cody Runnels, which would lead to the pair becoming two-time OVW Southern Tag Team Champions.

Spears spoke about this period of time on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, revealing:

“I remember, we were in OVW and we were a tag team. And Dusty, his dad, came down and he was all ‘Hey baby, we’re going to put you guys together. Young, good-looking guys. You got a little bit of experience.’”

Cody Rhodes had been training since the age of 12 and had been trained by his father, among others, before joining OVW in 2006.

While Spears would go on to find success of his own in WWE (particularly in his return to the company in 2013) and elsewhere on the wrestling scene, Dusty Rhodes would reveal his opinion on the future of Cody Rhodes to Spears, with the Perfect 10 revealing:

“It was a really smart idea, but Dusty said ‘Nice babyface tag-team, we’ll give you a bit of a run. But I need you to know, Cody is destined to be a star.’

“He told me that way back when. I don’t think Cody was in a year. But he [Dusty] knew it.”

Rhodes would make his WWE television debut on July 2 2007 with his in-ring debut following on July 16 of that year.

During his short time in OVW, Rhodes would not only hold the OVW Southern Tag Team Championship twice, but would also be the OVW Heavyweight Champion and OVW Television Champion.

Spears would make his main roster debut in August 2008 joining WWE’s incarnation of ECW.  He would leave the company in 2009 before returning in 2013 on WWE NXT, making his way to SmackDown.

Spears was granted his release from WWE in February 2019 and joined AEW shortly thereafter.
