A backstage note has emerged regarding some internal WWE discussion ahead of SmackDown last night as to avoid spoiling a result.
Last night’s show featured the start of the tournament to determine the first ever WWE Women’s United States Champion, and the full tournament bracket being revealed in a graphic.
Later in the show, Nia Jax was set to defend the WWE Women’s Championship against Naomi in the main event.
Interestingly, despite her title match against Jax, Naomi was included in the bracket for the Women’s United States Championship tournament that was shown early in the show.
According to a report from Fightful Select, there was some backstage discussion regarding the placement of the graphic.
Some people in the company reportedly felt that Naomi being shown in the bracket would “telegraph” the result of her match against Jax.
That being that Jax would win because Naomi wouldn’t enter the tournament if she’s WWE Women’s Champion going into it.
Despite the concerns, WWE did end up showing the graphic, and Jax did indeed retain her title against Naomi in the main event.
In the tournament itself, Bayley advanced in the first match with a win over Candice LeRae and B-Fab.
The other first round three-way matches are Bianca Belair vs Chelsea Green vs Blair Davenport, Jade Cargill vs Michin vs Piper Niven, and Naomi vs Tiffany Stratton vs Elektra Lopez.
The first ever Women’s United States Champion will be decided in the eventual one-on-one tournament final at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 14.
