The WWE creative for a current major storyline has seen ‘tons of pivots’ according to one of the stars involved.
The Undisputed WWE Champion turned heel in March, ahead of winning his 17th WWE world title at WrestleMania 41 in April.
With Cena making limited appearances in his final year as a wrestler, the WWE Champion has revealed that plans have changed for him numerous times this year already.
In a recent interview with Collider, John Cena addressed the adaptability of storytelling in WWE, stating:
“There is no more adaptable form of storytelling than WWE. WWE can change a story as it happens live.”
Highlighting his point about changing a story as it happens, Cena would go on to note the pivots he’s had during his retirement year so far, saying:
“You’re seeing, so far over the farewell tour dates, the 18 of 36 so far, we’ve made a ton of pivots, a ton of pivots right there in the moment.”
Cena has previously stated that he plans to “ruin wrestling” during his championship run, which saw him become a record-breaking 17-time world champion.
Sharing his honest thoughts with Collider, Cena would go on to reveal that the audience has been influential in dictating the pivots of his story, explaining:
“As we get close to the end of this thing, what dictates those pivots is the audience, and I think the audience will begin to feel differently, because now we are truly coming to the end.
“So, if you ever had a voice to use, if you ever wanted to say something, I hate to steal my own cliché, but the time is now. I look forward to the road ahead because the audience is going to dictate the direction we go.
“I think it’s a wonderful time to be a fan. I think a lot of different talent are being able to capitalize on all we’re doing, and I applaud the WWE for always being able to think extended but pivot on a dime in a moment, as it happens. I think that’s their strongest suit.”
Recently, WWE President Nick Khan revealed that the creative team are encouraged to write for “the (WWE) Universe” and not for those who criticize.
John Cena is set to defend the Undisputed WWE Championship against CM Punk at Night of Champions on June 28.
