The consistent decline in WWE attendances was not helped by Christmas spirit, as house shows over this week have seen large parts of the arenas devoid of fans.
According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the annual Madison Square Garden house show, which has a capacity of 15,000, drew just 11,900 fans.
If you compare this to the joint NJPW/ROH show set for later this year at the same venue which sold out 15,000 within minutes, you can see why there is concern within WWE.
Meltzer described the WWE attendance as “the smallest crowd for a show that week in recent memory”.
The week’s other house show in Chicago “did only 6,000 and the Allstate Arena Christmas show regularly would do 10,000 even in bad times so there is a real issue going on that was worse than imagined.”
It was reported that of this 6,000, many left early after the Daniel Bryan match was put on before the mid-show intermission.
Combined with the dreadful ratings SmackDown and Raw have been achieving of late, you can’t help but feel WWE will have to do something drastic soon to change their fortunes.
