UPDATE: Dave Meltzer later tweeted that this is “nothing remotely close” to what he meant with what he wrote, but he then deleted that tweet.
The future of a top WWE star may have been revealed in the analysis of the top-tier picture in the company.
In the current Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscription required), Dave Meltzer explored the need for a main event-level heel, suggesting names that could fill that role.
One idea that specifically came up was turning Drew McIntyre heel, despite McIntyre’s uncertain status with the company right now.
Meltzer would then touch on the McIntyre situation some more, writing:
“Because McIntyre right now is working with the idea there’s a good chance he’s finishing up, he could do a big program for the title as a challenger and finally leave.”
As of the most recent update from Dave Meltzer, WWE and Drew McIntyre were “still far apart” when it comes to a contract issue and his deal is coming up later this year.
McIntyre hasn’t been seen in the WWE ring since facing Sheamus and Gunther at WrestleMania 39 on April 2, 2023, reportedly due to him being out recovering from injury/health issues.
Meltzer later added in the Observer:
McIntyre will be out of action for a few more weeks. Nothing has changed regarding his contract situation
To add more uncertainty, WWE is no longer advertising McIntyre for the Money in the Bank event in London on July 1 – read more about that at this link.
We’ll continue to keep you updated on McIntyre’s status.
