WWE’s Gunther Addresses Potential On-Screen Interaction With Honky Tonk Man

WWE’s Gunther Addresses Potential On-Screen Interaction With Honky Tonk Man WWE

Gunther has been WWE Intercontinental Champion for 423 days and, after SummerSlam, has a record-breaking reign in his sights.

Currently having the second longest reign for the championship in company history, Gunther is closing on taking the top spot held by the Honky Tonk Man.

If Gunther remains champion until September 7, he’ll break the record.

Honky Tonk Man’s reign started on June 2, 1987, and would continue until August 29, 1988, when he would lose the title to Ultimate Warrior at that year’s SummerSlam after 453 days.

With Gunther’s win over Drew McIntyre carrying the Imperium leader a step close to Honky Tonk Man’s record, he recently spoke about a possible interaction, or even a match, between the two.

While there may be some interest in seeing the longest reigning Intercontinental Champion facing his record rival in a “skit or match”, Gunther doesn’t share that enthusiasm. Speaking to Metro, he said:

“No, I don’t think so. I think he had his time, he’s still got the record – it’s not broken, we will see what happens.

“I think I operate on a different level than him when it comes to what we do in the ring.

“‘I think my presentation’s very different, and also how I carry myself. I think it would just not be a good fit. I don’t think anybody would benefit from that.”

Sheamus has recently teased the idea of bringing Gunther’s reign to an end before he smashes Honky Tonk Man’s record.

GUNTHER has also discussed Sheamus as a challenger, questioning his focus.
