A WWE Hall of Famer has called for Cody Rhodes to undergo some changes to his character and presentation on television.
This past Friday’s episode of SmackDown (February 6) saw Cody Rhodes deliver an impassioned promo in response to both his elimination from the Royal Rumble by Undisputed WWE Champion Drew McIntyre and the war of words between WrestleMania 42 opponents CM Punk and Roman Reigns on the February 2 episode of Raw.
While the promo garnered high praise from WWE Hall of Famer Mark Henry – who stated that it reminded him of Cody’s father Dusty Rhodes – Henry’s Busted Open co-host Bully Ray had some critique regarding Cody’s presentation and character.
Speaking with Dave LaGreca on Busted Open, Bully said he wants to see a less “polished” and more “gritty” version of “The American Nightmare” akin to his father Dusty Rhodes, Bully Ray said:
“I hate to make this comparison, because I don’t think it’s fair to Cody to mention this other person’s name in the same breath as him anymore, but, I always loved Dusty looking like a dishevelled mess. With the jeans on and the rock n’ roll t-shirt kind of half tucked in, or even when Dusty wore the suit, it looks like he had on the suit from the day before and went to the strip club and slept in the suit and then showed up in the studio in the suit the next day still reeking of women and liquor.
“And it’s worked for Cody, don’t get me wrong but it’s so polished. I’d like a little bit of a more raw, edgy, gritty look. And if this is what Cody is evolving into or morphing into I don’t have a problem with that because the wrestling business can get to you.
“Cody’s been back in the WWE now for what? Five years or whatever it is. Through the wars he’s been through, who he’s had to face, who’s screwing him over and Drew McIntyre not even in the Rumble but chooses a moment in time in which he Claymores Cody Rhodes and Cody gets eliminated.
“I still think Cody is playing angry a little bit. I look forward to the day that we’re getting the true anger, the true hatred, the true vitriol out of Cody. He’s on his way there, maybe this thing against Drew can get him there even more.”
