Charles Wright (The Godfather) has reacted to Danhausen’s WWE merchandise sales success, and why gimmicks like his are so popular with a younger crowd now, in comparison to the early 1990s.

Whether it was as Papa Shango, Kama Mustafa, The Godfather or The Goodfather, Charles Wright played several distinct characters across his WWE Hall of Fame career.

While the more outlandish characters of the 1980s, 90s and 2000s have become more uncommon in WWE over the past two decades, Danhausen is someone who has provided WWE an injection of silliness and comedy that many fans felt had been missing in the product for some time.

Danhausen’s success since debuting in WWE at February’s Elimination Chamber PLE has seen him capture the imaginations of the audience, young and old, as well as reportedly climb to the number two spot in WWE’s top merchandise sellers list – with three of his designs taking up spots in the top five best selling shirts in the company.

During an interview with Sportshadow Wrestling, Charles Wright was asked why he feels a character such as Danhausen has so much popularity with young fans now, when back in the early 1990s kids were scared of Papa Shango.

Wright said:

“Social media, people, video games, movies. Kids back in the day when I was Papa Shango, now they’re 40 years old, they were 8 years old then or 10 years old, there wasn’t PlayStations or games of war and movies. So, I was the real boogeyman. People weren’t seeing that type of stuff on TV…

“Even when I do these conventions and I sign as Papa Shango and I dress up as Papa Shango, the parents, I go to shake their hands and they’re shaking, and the kids are laughing, they’re not scared at all because of what they see today. But that’s the difference, social media and everything that’s going on.”

Wright then shared his thoughts on Danhausen being among WWE’s top merchandise sellers, with the former Intercontinental Champion saying that goes to show how much wrestling has changed over the years:

“The day of the big 6’7, 300lbs wrestlers are over now. And I think with all the indie scene and everything go on, I think now wrestling is more normal looking people instead of the big guys.

“And I have nothing against him, I’ve met him for or five times as Papa Shango. He’s very respectful. I wish him the best man.

“That just goes to show how wrestling’s changed, you know, now the number one merchandise seller is a voodoo guy. I wish I was around right now.”

As well as climb to the top of WWE’s merchandise sales charts, Danhausen has also been gaining notoriety in the world of sports after cursing the Cleveland Cavaliers, who trail the New York Knicks 2-0 in the NBA Eastern Conference Finals.
