It came as a shock to WWE fans when news broke that NXT Champion and new Raw and Smackdown star Tommaso Ciampa was set to vacate his championship and undergo next surgery, possibly leaving him on the sidelines for a year.
Well, it has since been reported by Cageside Seats that this news did not come as a surprise to WWE officials. Supposedly, WWE management knew of Ciampa’s neck injury before his call up to the main roster on the 19th February episode of Raw.
Ciampa will miss NXT Takeover: New York, and as a new face on the main roster, the timing couldn’t be any worse for Ciampa as he is set to be on the sidelines for a lengthy period of time. However, fans of Ciampa can take solace in the fact that it has also been reported that WWE already has plans for a storyline for Ciampa’s return when he is cleared to compete again, whenever that may be.
Ciampa has a bright feature in the WWE, and it is clear that the company want to have him return in a meaningful storyline. Whilst it has not been suggested exactly what plans WWE in store for the despicable heel, one has to assume that these will more than likely involve former best friend turned bitter-enemy Johnny Gargano, for whom Ciampa’s injury might also affect.
