WWE Hall of Famer Rob Van Dam has recalled his memorable ECW One Night Stand 2006 match with John Cena following his heel turn.
Back at ECW One Night Stand 2006, Rob Van Dam defeated John Cena to win the WWE Championship in the main event.
The match is mostly remembered for the hostile reaction that a babyface Cena received from the hardcore New York City crowd inside the Hammerstein Ballroom with one fan in particular holding up a “If Cena Wins, We Riot” sign.
At WWE Elimination Chamber 2025, John Cena shocked the wrestling world by turning heel on Cody Rhodes with a bloody beatdown and aligning with The Rock.
Speaking on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, RVD commented on John Cena turning heel and called back to their match at ECW One Night Stand 2006. He said:
“He knew what to do that night, perfectly. He’s really great at what he does so I think he’s gonna really master the heel persona and take it some places we didn’t expect.”
“And by the way, I had seen him get booed – it wasn’t a lot, but leading up to that One Night Stand match, there was a town or two, I think it was Wales, was the first time I think that I’d heard… it was very similar to the vibe in Hammerstein Ballroom, it was very similar.”
“That was the first time I’d seen him get booed and he was great. He was like, ‘That’s right, boo me, let me know how you feel, as long as you’re out there in the crowd and you’re expressing yourself and you’re screaming, then I know you’re having a good time and that’s what it’s all about tonight!'”
“And obviously he turned them, they were cheering him. And I was like, ‘Wow, that’s why he gets paid the big bucks’.”
Cena is set to challenge Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship at WrestleMania 41. For the full lineup for the event, click this link here.
