WWE/AEW
An update on WWE’s interest in a new AEW signing prior to him being announced as All Elite last night on Collision.
Last night, former IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champion Kevin Knight took part in a match on AEW Collision, where he faced off against Switchblade Jay White.
Knight’s match came after his contract with NJPW expired at the end of January, with him officially being announced as ‘All Elite’ following his match.
Knight had been a highly sought after free agent, with both AEW and WWE reportedly interest in signing him before he ultimately opted to sign with AEW.
In an update from Fightful Select (subscription required), Knight met with Tony Khan and Rocky Romero early in February, which was around the time he worked an ROH taping, facing off against AR Fox.
Around that time, Knight was reportedly also looking to speak with WWE.
PWInsider had reported that Knight had an invited WWE tryout, which Fightful has not yet been able to confirm that.
Fightful inquired with sources at the WWE Performance Center, one long-time staff member noted that ‘I’m not sure what more they needed to see. He wrestled in New Japan, CMLL, AEW, Ring of Honor, MLW and TNA. There are looks at this guy on every other stage but ours. Glad we were at least trying though.’
Fightful confirms that WWE had interest, with him likely to have started out in NXT had he been signed.
Fightful spoke to sources within TNA and other companies, but they believed that he wouldn’t be returning unless he signed with WWE.
