A newly signed star seemingly had interest from WWE before choosing to sign a deal with New Japan Pro-Wrestling.
It was recently reported that Olympic gold medalist Aaron Wolf had signed with NJPW, with his debut set for Wrestle Kingdom 20.
Further details of international interest for the services of Wolf have emerged thanks to the Wrestling Observer Daily Update.
According to Dave Meltzer, it is believed that Aaron Wolf had interest from WWE before he signed with NJPW.
Meltzer noted that Wolf had previously stated that “a much larger overseas promotion had offered him a deal”, indicating potentially WWE or AEW.
As for the rationale behind Wolf’s decision to sign with NJPW, Meltzer revealed that AEW’s Kazuchika Okada played an instrumental part.
According to Meltzer, Okada told Wolf that New Japan Pro-Wrestling was the best place to learn to become a pro-wrestler.
Meltzer would also note that Wolf will be a full-time wrestler in NJPW, with his signing being among the biggest sports-related signing in the company’s history.
With Wolf’s NJPW debut scheduled to take place at Wrestle Kingdom 20 on January 4, 2026, Meltzer noted that the Olympic gold medalist is embarking on “the biggest path to superstardom of anyone who has come into pro wrestling from day one.”
Wolf won gold in the men’s 100kg judo at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. He retired from Judo in June.
