WWE Star Admits He Didn’t Expect His Catchphrase To Take Off WWE

The winner of the WWE Royal Rumble Men’s Match, Jey Uso, has opened up about the popularity of Yeet and the moment it took off.

With Uso eliminating John Cena at the February 1, 2025, WWE PLE, the fans joined the star and his son in a ‘Yeet’ filled celebration, as can be seen below this news story.

During a recent appearance on Nightcap, Uso looked back on the origins of him using this catchphrase, explaining:

“If you really pay attention, like, my brothers, Roman, we’ve kind of been saying that from the jump. If you look at old promos or whatever, you’ll hear him.

“You know, it’s also West Coast slang. It’s been a slang before ‘Yeet’ became a meme. Like, I’m a little older than the little homies who are like, ‘Oh, that’s just a meme, a catchphrase where you’re yeeting people.’ But it’s been slang.

“The ‘T’ wasn’t even on there. It used to be ‘Ye,’ like, ‘ye e e e e e,’ you know? You said it a little too hard though, you gotta pull it back.”

Jey would go on to discuss how the WWE Fastlane 2023 post-show press conference appearance with Cody Rhodes helped the catchphrase to take off.

The press conference saw Uso and Rhodes in high spirits in a moment that The American Nightmare would later describe as an “under-appreciated gem“.

Speaking about the rather chaotic press interview with the pair, Uso revealed how Rhodes using the catchphrase was a turning point, stating:

“But, man, I didn’t expect it to take off like that. It just took off. And I feel like it kind of took off at the press conference.

“If you watch the press conference, like, you know, if you watch you know and then, Cody saying ‘Ye,’ and then it just took off, man.

“Like, I think that was a turning point. But I never thought it would take off the way it did.”

In the wake of the Royal Rumble win, Jey Uso has revealed his plans to face GUNTHER at WrestleMania 41 in April 2025 for the WWE. World Heavyweight Championship.
