AEW announcer and WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has reflected on John Cena’s heel turn at Elimination Chamber.
The March 1 WWE PLE saw Cena side with The Rock, attacking Cody Rhodes moments afterwards.
Speaking about the moment on his Grilling JR podcast, Jim Ross shared his thoughts on the heel turn.
Calling the heel turn a “jaw-dropper” Ross shared his praise for the angle, declaring:
“I liked it, I liked the hell out of it. I thought it was timely, I thought it made sense, I thought it added to the show, a jaw-dropper to say the least. I had no issues with it at all, I thought it was fabulous. Good TV.”
The change of character would subsequently see Cena gain a Guinness World Record as longest-serving WWE face.
The former WWE Executive Vice President of Talent Relations would go on to reveal why Cena hadn’t been turned heel earlier in his career, stating:
“A lot of people wanted it to happen (in the past), but Vince was always very reticent in pulling the string on that deal. And one of the reasons is that Cena’s merchandise numbers were astonishing.”

WWE recently released new merch during Cena’s Retirement Tour ahead of the European Road To WrestleMania show in Brussels, Belgium.
Brussels will be the home of the March 17 episode of WWE Raw, with Cena advertised for an appearance on the show.
During the pre-AEW Revolution media call, Tony Khan was asked his thoughts on Cena’s heel turn and whether or not he felt any added pressure when it comes to creative.
Khan would praise what’s taking in place in AEW at the moment, going on to note that he doesn’t plan to change anything just because another promotion has changed things.
