John Cena makes rare appearances on WWE, with only one match in 2022, and he’s recently revealed what’s brought him back for WrestleMania 39.
Cena’s only match in 2022 saw him team with Kevin Owens against The Bloodline (Roman Reigns & Sami Zayn).
Skip to 2023, and WWE fans will shortly see John Cena vs Austin Theory for the WWE United States Championship at WrestleMania 39.
Cena has recently spoken about the reason for his return and why he is facing Austin Theory.
Speaking to Dan Gelston of AP News, Cena explained the circumstances, saying:
“You would be surprised at my answer. Because that’s what I was told would happen.
“I don’t do that. I don’t say, I want to do this. I want to work with that person. I don’t ever do that. I’ve never done that.
“I just try and do what I’m told to do and do it to the best of my abilities. Instead of dictating my terms, I often just try to make the performance the best it can be.
“What I don’t do and what I’ve never done is curate the direction of the narrative. I don’t pick opponents, but I love to tell stories.
“I didn’t pick Austin Theory but I certainly spoke from the heart (on RAW).”
Cena recently spoke about his emotional return to WWE Raw on March 6, describing it as “the first time I entered the arena and had the thought it might be the last time.”
In the AP News interview, Cena would also share his thoughts on his friendship with Vince McMahon.
He would also reveal his thoughts on the potential WWE sale.
