John Cena is the WWE Intercontinental Champion for the first time, and footage has emerged of the backstage reaction from several WWE stars
The soon-to-be-retired star claimed the WWE Intercontinental Championship after his victory over Dominik Mysterio on the November 10 episode of Raw.
While Cena’s grand slam status has now been completed, Xavier Woods and Kofi Kingston were less than impressed that he had even got a shot at the championship.
Woods shared footage on Twitter – which you can view below – of his conversation with Kingston as they watched Cena being handed the championship, saying:
“Why? Why does he get a shot? We can’t get a shot at the tag titles. Cena gets a shot at the IC whenever he wants, cos he’s leaving. The Last Time is Now. He had so much time to get your shot.”
Mocking Cena, Woods would go on to clap for the newly crowned champion, seemingly in an equally dismissive way, before criticising the use of pyro, stating:
“And, the pyro? Who is he? Penta? All the pyro now.
“Really earned it. Really earned that one. (Pointing at the screen and addressing someone off camera) He really earned that one. Yeah, what a great guy. What a great guy. Are you putting it, Becky?”
We then get to see that it was Becky Lynch who was just out of camera shot, with the WWE Women’s Intercontinental Champion sharing her own thoughts, declaring:
“Yeah. But I will say, now the two best in the world, the greatest of all time. I’m not just saying it, other people say it. Triple H said it. Sports Illustrated said it. The greatest of all time.”
While Woods may not enjoy seeing Cena as WWE Intercontinental Champion, he was more supportive of Lynch, saying:
“I’ll say yes for you.”
Lynch would reiterate that she is not the one saying she is the best, that it’s other people with that opinion of her, with Woods going on to clarify:
“Best. Best. Best. Earned her title shot (pointing at Becky). Did not earn that title shot (pointing at Cena on the TV screen).”
The New Day have had issues with WWE management recently, calling out Raw General Manager Adam Pearce for comments he made about a boat trip.
